Vila Nova de São Bento (formerly: Aldeia Nova de São Bento ) is a city and a municipality in the district of Freguesia in Portugal Serpa, with an area of ​​242.2 km ² and 3079 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). This corresponds to a population density of 12.7 inh. / Km ².

History

In the 14th century the Knights Order of Avis received the territory of King D.Dinis to colonize, and founded several villages here. During the Restoration War from 1640 to the present town developed when Portuguese troops encamped here. Before the Spanish armies had fled Portuguese residents of surrounding places fled to them to seek their protection. King D. João IV was then there build houses for them, and the present town developed.

In 1988, the previous Aldeia Nova de São Bento ( Aldeia, Portuguese for village) raised to Vila ( town ) and renamed.

Sights and culture

Among his various monuments counts, next to the old Customs House, and various religious buildings, the late Baroque parish church Igreja de Aldeia Nova Paroquial de São Bento (also simply Igreja de São Bento ) from the 18th century.

Nationally known was the traditional men's chorus Rancho de Cantadores de Aldeia Nova de São Bento. It was founded in 1986 and has since been both nationally and internationally frequently occurred, even in Germany.
