Vila Nova do Ceira is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit Gois. 927 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Since at this remote area only little documentation exists after the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal, it is only known that there was already some communities here in the 13th century. Since 1927, ie the municipality of Vila Nova do Ceira while it was previously called várzea de Gois, and after the incorporation middle of the 18th century also Várzea de Gois e Chapinheira. Even today, the church is popularly known as várzea, after her until today the most important place. The entire area belonged always to the circle of Gois.

Culture and sights

Besides a number of churches and the complex Centro de Dia de Vila Nova do Ceira is (Eng.: Day Hospice of Vila Nova do Ceiro ) under monument protection. The hospital built in 1915, was named after its builder Hospital Monteiro Bastos before it was used by the Estado Novo regime as a recreational home. As a day care home only the ground floor is used, while the upper floors are waiting for financing the necessary already planned restorations, given the deep recession of the country as a result of the banking crisis today.
