Vilhjálmur Einarsson

Vilhjálmur Einarsson ( born June 4, 1934 in Reyðarfjörður ) is a former Icelandic athlete and Olympic medalist.

Vilhjálmur is the son of Einar Stefánsson and Sigríður Vilhjálmsdóttir and grew up in the small fishing village Reyðarfjörður in eastern Iceland. Of his early years nothing is known.

International recognition he came at the XVI. Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, when he with 16.26 meters won the silver medal in the triple jump, behind the Brazilian Adhemar Ferreira da Silva ( gold ) and before Witold Kreyer antretenden for the Soviet Union ( bronze). At the European Championships in 1958 Einarsson won the bronze medal with 16.00 meters.

His personal best he set in 1960 in Laugardalsvöllur to 16.70 meters.

After his athletic career, he was director at three schools: the Héraðsskólinn Laugarvatn, the Reykholtsskóli Reykholt, and the Menntaskólinn in Egilsstaðir, where he still works as a part-time instructor in mathematics. Einarsson is known in Iceland as a landscape painter.

Until the arrival of the Icelandic national handball team in the Olympic final in 2008 Vilhjálmur Einarsson's silver medal was the biggest success in the Icelandic sports history.
