Villa Romana di Patti

The Villa Romana di Patti is archaeological place in the form of an ancient Roman villa in Patti, Messina in Sicily.

General

During construction of the A20 highway between Messina and Palermo, the remains of a Roman villa were discovered. The terrain was estimated by samples on an area of ​​20,000 m². Thus, the grounds of the Villa di Patti is greater than that of the Villa Romana del Casale near Piazza Armerina. Today the villa is under a bridge of the highway.

History

The villa was built in the 3rd century. However, it was abandoned in the 4th century. End of the 4th century, the villa was finally destroyed by an earthquake. In the 6th and 7th centuries, the buildings were partially inhabited again after the buildings were partially restored. In the 10th and 11th century, the area was used as a cemetery.

The Villa

The floors of the villa are covered with mosaics. The main motive of the mosaics are geometric pattern. But there are also mapped pets, so in a large hall. The excavations and the building collapsed walls is not yet complete.
