Piazza Armerina

Piazza Armerina is a municipality in the province of Enna in Sicily region of Italy, with 22,042 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Piazza Armerina is located 32 km south of Enna. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and industry. In industry, particularly clothing, building materials and tools are produced.

The districts of Piazza Armerina with the Monte Colle mira, Floristella, Grottacalda, Polleri, Santa Croce, Ileano, Azzolina, Farrugio and Serrafina. History

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times by people. The municipality's territory remains of settlements and a necropolis dating from the 8th century BC have been found. The Romans also settled as can be seen the Villa Romana del Casale. From the 14th century migrated especially Lombards and settled on the mountain. The growing city was surrounded by a wall, but soon could not handle all the new residential area. The city stretched out on the hills and slopes of the environment further.

Today's Piazza Armerina was founded in 1080. In 1161 the city was destroyed by the Normans. It was then rebuilt in 1163. In medieval times, then developed the actual city. In 1296 was held here the Sicilian Parliament. Since 1817, the city 's bishopric.

Environment

  • Villa Romana del Casale, 4 km south-west of Piazza Armerina located. The information presented here well preserved mosaics led to the Villa Romana del Casale was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • Church of Sant 'Andrea, inaugurated in 1096, with frescoes from the 12th to the 14th century by Pope Pius II.
