Leonforte

Leon Forte is a city in the province of Enna in Sicily region of Italy, with 13,806 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Leon Forte is situated 18 km north-east of Enna at an altitude of 612 m. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Assoro, Calascibetta, Enna, Nicosia and Nissoria.

History

The town was founded in 1610 by Prince Nicolo Placido Branciforte.

Cityscape

The center is the Piazza Margherita. Worth seeing are the San Giovanni Battista Church and the Branciforte -palace from the 17th century. The Gran Fonte (large wells) was created in 1651 by order of the town's founder, Branciforte at what was then the outskirts. Built in the style of Sicilian Baroque, he served as a major livestock watering.
