Ville Sirén

Ville Sirén ( born February 11, 1964 in Tampere ) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey player who played in his time from 1981 to 1999 among others for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars of the National Hockey League.

Career

Ville Sirén began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at youth level Ilves Tampere, for the first team to 1985 he was active from 1982 in the SM- liiga. With Ilves he won in the 1984/85 season for the first and only time in his career, the Finnish Championship. During his time with Ilves of the defenders was also selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1983 in the second round than a total of 23 players from the Hartford Whalers, for which he, however, never played. On November 16, 1984 Hartford gave the rights to the Finns in exchange for Pat Boutette to the Pittsburgh Penguins from, for in the National Hockey League he was on the ice for three years before he and Steve Gotaas in on December 17, 1988 exchange for Gord Dineen and Scott Bjugstad to the Minnesota North Stars was made. After one and a half years with the Minnesota North Stars in the NHL Sirén returned in the summer of 1990 returned to his native Finland, where he received a contract with HPK Hämeenlinna in the SM- liiga. There he remained as a season long, as then in its league rivals and his former club Ilves Tampere.

From 1992 to 1995, the shooter was left on in the Swedish Elitserien for Luleå HF and VIK Västerås HK, where he was defeated for the championship with Luleå Brynäs IF in the season 1992/93 until the finale. After the former national team had started the season 1995/96 when EHC Olten in the National League B, he joined shortly before the end of season for SC Bern of the National League A. Bern, for which he was on the ice a total of two years, he won in the 1996/97 season the Swiss Championship. The 1997/98 season ended Sirén the SG Cortina of the Italian Serie A, for which he, however, only two games played in which he scored a goal and gave two assists. Following the 1998/99 season, in which he was the reigning Finnish champions HIFK Helsinki under contract, the two -time Olympian finished his career at the age of 35 years.

Internationally

For Finland Sirén participated in the Junior World Championships in 1983 and 1984, as well as the World Championships in 1985, 1991 and 1993 in part. In addition, he was in the squad Finland at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and 1992 in Albertville.
