History

The demand for a bridge grew in the 1920s with the increase in car traffic, the ferry service between Vilsund (Thy ) and Sundby ( Mols ) was no longer meeting. For a draft of Engelund, which provided a bridge with five steel arches and a flap portion in the middle, the senior administrator of the Office Thisted requested government grants, which were also approved in 1936. Following a public tender in May 1937 began in the same year, construction work, and two years later, the building, the cost of which amounted to 3 million crowns was officially on 16 July 1939 by State Minister Thorvald Stauning and the Danish King Christian X. inaugurated. Although in the local population of Mors ruled satisfaction with the Vilsundbroen, the new bridge was seen as a " back door " by Mors. A " front door ", that is a bridge over the Sallingsund in the south, which connects the island to the mainland also had to wait with the 1978 finished Sallingsundbroen nearly 40 years away. The increase in general and heavy traffic in the 1960s and 1970s, which still grew after the opening of Sallingsundbroen, did a renovation and reinforcement of the bridge is required. The necessary work was carried out from 1974 to 1981, during which on the southern side of a combined foot and bicycle path was installed.
