Virago Press

Virago Press is a British publisher, which deals with especially demanding literature of women and for women.

Virago Press was founded in 1973 by Carmen Callil who wondered why there were publishers of all sorts of special interests and minorities, but none that " 52 % of the world population " cared about - namely the women. Its program was influenced by the "Women's Lib " movement, but not aligned with radical feminist; thus, the publisher often saw between the chairs, but was soon boosted by the strong reaction of the media. With its specific program Virago quickly became a household name in public.

For the laid authors include contemporary writers such as Margaret Atwood, but also older English literature as Elizabeth von Arnim. Virago published a classic series of works by Jane Austen, George Elliott, the Brontë sisters, and others, as well as a number of modern classics like Marilyn French, Joyce Carol Oates, Eudora Welty, and Edith Wharton. 1997 Virago was taken by Little Brown and now belongs to the company Time Warner Books UK.
