Virandeville

Virandeville is a commune with 802 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to Canton Équeurdreville -Hainneville and the Local Government Association Douve et Divette.

Geography

Virandeville is on the Cotentin peninsula on the D650 twelve kilometers southwest of Cherbourg- Octeville, ten kilometers south-west from the cantonal capital Équeurdreville -Hainneville and seven kilometers north-east of the coast of the English Channel at Siouville -Hague. Neighboring communities of Virandeville are Saint-Christophe- du- Foc in the south, Teurthéville -Hague in the Northeast and Helleville in the West. In addition to Virandeville includes the hamlet Hameau les Contes and Baudretot. The Divette flows west of the town center by the municipality.

History

According to François de Beaurepaire is the local name Gallic origin and originated from the word eganda, a synonym for "water". The addition villa was made in the 10th century. According to Ernest Nègre Virandeville was first mentioned as Virandevilla 996-1008 documented. He assumes that Wirandus was a form of a Germanic name, who was related to Guirandus .. Or is the first element of the Germanic name Wirandus.

The priory of Sainte -Croix was founded in 1197 in Virandeville, it first belonged to the Benedictine Abbey in Saint- Sauveur- le -Vicomte and later to the abbey of Saint- Pierre -de- Cormeilles. During the French Revolution (1789-1799) the relics of the 1859 beatified Helye Thomas ( 1180-1257 ) were kept in Virandeville.

Attractions

A chapel from the 15th century, which belonged to the priory of Sainte- Croix, now used as a residential building.
