Vireux-Molhain

Vireux - Molhain is a French community with 1650 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Ardennes department in the Champagne- Ardenne region. It belongs to the canton of Givet and the Communauté de communes Kommunalverband Ardennes Rives de Meuse.

Geography

It lies at the mouth of Viroin into the Meuse, on the left bank of the Meuse and directly adjoins the neighboring town Vireux- Wallerand.

History

In the 3rd and 4th centuries insisted on the Mont Vireux, a mountain spur to the left of the Meuse south of the virion mouth, a Roman fort. Not far away, also the associated burial ground with significant finds of Late Antiquity was uncovered. In the 8th century a collegiate church was built in what is now the district Molhain whose crypt is preserved even under the present church. In the 13th to 14th century, the Mont Vireux was fixed again.

Attractions

  • The Collegiate Church ( Eglise de - collégiale Molhain ) is classified as a historical monument.
  • The church of Saint -Martin dates from the 18th century.
  • For some well-preserved buildings from the 16th to the 18th centuries include houses on the Place de la Collegiate Church, in the Rue de la Jussière, Rue de la Tanneries and Avenue Roger- Posty.
  • In the Tourist Office of the Municipality fossils are shown from the environment in a permanent exhibition.

Infrastructure

The centers of both Vireux- places are connected by a bridge over the Meuse.

From the traffic routes through the valley of the Meuse run on the left bank of the Meuse, the national road 51 and the railway line from Charleville to Givet, on the right of the bike path Voie Transardenne. The old railway line to Mariembourg is indeed used by the museum railway Chemin de Fer à Vapeur des trois Vallées ( Three Valleys Steam Railway ), but their trains terminate beyond the Belgian border in Viroinval - Treignes.
