Province

Virginia is a city in the South African province of the Free State. It is located in the municipality in the district Matjhabeng Lejweleputswa.

Geography

2011 had Virginia - including the townships Meloding - 66 208 inhabitants. The city lies on both banks of the Sand River, a tributary of the Vet, which in turn flows into the Vaal. History

In 1890, two railway engineers came from the U.S. state of Virginia in the area and carved near the farm Merriespruit the name of their home country in a stone.
