Viscount Chelmsford

Viscount Chelmsford, Chelmsford in the county of Essex, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is run by the family Thesinger and is named after the town of Chelmsford.

Award

The title was awarded in 1921 to the British statesman Frederic John Napier Thesiger, 3rd Baron Chelmsford. This had previously been Governor of Queensland and New South Wales as well as Viceroy of India.

Subordinate title

The grandfather of the first Viscount, Frederic Thesiger, a prominent lawyer, was in 1858 created Baron Chelmsford, Chelmsford in the county of Essex, where, so he could officiate as Lord Chancellor in the Cabinet of Lord Derby.
