Viscount Hardinge

Viscount Hardinge of Lahore and Kings Newton in the county of Derbyshire, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, named after the family Hardinge.

Ancestral home of the family is Broadmere House in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Award

The title was in 1846 the officer, Governor-General of India and politicians awarded Sir Henry Hardinge. He had previously commanded the victorious British troops in the Battle of Sobraon against the Sikhs.

He later became commander of the British army.

More titles

The sixth Viscount inherited in 1986 by a distant relative of the title Hardinge Baronet, of Lurran. This was in 1801 awarded to an uncle of the first Viscount. At the ceremony had been expressly determined that the title of the first baronet of brothers and their male descendants could be inherited.

The baronetcy is now operated as a subordinate title of Viscountswürde.

A branch of the family also holds the title of Baron Hardinge of Penshurst. This was Charles Hardinge, a younger son of the second Viscount, was awarded.
