Vitali Smirnov

Vitaly Georgijewitsch Smirnov (Russian Виталий Георгиевич Смирнов; born February 14, 1935 in Khabarovsk ) is a Russian sports official.

Life

Since 1971, Smirnov is a member of the International Olympic Committee. Smirnov is currently the longest- represented in the IOC committee member; it follows the Finnish sailors Peter Tallberg.

Between 1968 and 1970, Smirnov was first secretary of the city committee of the CPSU from Pushkin. From 1970 to 1975 he was Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of the USSR. From 1981 to 1990 he was Chairman of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of the RSFSR.

From 1990 to 1992 he was president of the Soviet National Olympic Committees. From 1992 to 2001 he was President of the Russian National Olympic Committee.
