The Vitim (Russian Витим ) is a 1837 km (with the right source river Witimkan 1978 km ) long, southern and orographic right tributary of the Lena River in Siberia ( Asian part of Russia ).

History and catchment area

The Vitim produced nearly 200 km as the crow east of Lake Baikal, in the eastern foothills of the Ikatgebirges ( Ikatski Chrebet ) near the settlement Warwarinski from the headwaters Witimkan from the right and from the left Tschina. The longer Witimkan source river originates approximately 100 km south-west of this place, in the southern part of the high rate at 2500 m Ikatgebirges in about 2100 m altitude. From its origin, the first Vitim winds south, then east to northeasterly direction along the southeastern edge of the Witimplateaus and runs north-west of Jablonowygebirges. Later he devoted himself to the north, breaking through the mountain ranges of Stanowoihochlands and reached the town of Vitim. There he joins with multiple arms in the Lena.

The catchment area of ​​Vitim, which is navigable only in its lower reaches from the city Bodaibo, comprises 225,000 km ².
