Vitry-le-François

Vitry -le- François is a city in France, capital of an arrondissement in the southeast of the department of Marne, in the Champagne -Ardenne region. It has a population of 13,106 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011), about 20,000 in the agglomeration.

Geography

The city is situated on the Marne, just north flows from the right of the river Saulx. A variety of artificial waterways here forms a hub for inland navigation in northeastern France. It take the following channels meet:

  • Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne ( German: canal between Champagne and Burgundy )
  • Lateral Canal à la Marne ( German: Marne- side channel )
  • Marne au Rhin Canal de la ( German: Rhein- Marne-Canal )

About 10 km south of the city is the largest reservoir of France, the Lac du Der -Chantecoq.

History

The city owes its name to the King Francis I, who had it rebuilt after it had been completely destroyed by the armies of Charles V. However, it was not built exactly at the same place; on their old location ( just northeast of the city) is now the village of Vitry -en- Perthois, formerly Vitry -le- Brûlé said.
