Vittorino da Feltre

Vitorino da Feltre (* 1378 in Feltre, † February 2nd 1446 in Mantua ), was an Italian Renaissance humanist and teacher. He was the most famous teachers of his time. His real name was Vittorino Ramboldini.

He studied at the University of Padua under Gasparino Barzizza and taught there later. In 1415, he learned Greek at the 18 months since Verona founded by Guarino school in Venice, which he taught in return in Latin. They left Venice because of the outbreak of the plague and went to Padua. In 1423 he was asked by Gianfrancesco Gonzaga I., Graf and later Marquis of Mantua, to teach its children. In Mantua since Feltre founded a school at which he taught the children of the Marquis and children of other prominent families, along with poor students. First he taught the three sons Gianfrancesco Gonzaga I., Luigi III. , Carlo, Gianlucido who were 3-9 years old, later born in 1425 Cecilia, the 1427 -born Alessandro, who was born in 1439 and Margherita. Among his pupils were also Federico da Montefeltro and Gregorio Correr. The greatest scholars of the time such as Guarino da Verona, Poggio Bracciolini, Francesco Filelfo sent their children to his school. 1441 came Theodorus Gaza to teach Greek and develop his knowledge of Latin. The school " La Giocosa " ( house of pleasure ) of the city was in a palace in the countryside of the Mincio, northeast housed. Vitorino da Feltre in Mantua taught until his death.

The da Verona, which he founded and Guarino schools were in Renaissance humanism, the ideal of education through its focus on: science, history, geography, music and physical exercises. They influenced the pedagogy and served until the 18th century as a school model.
