Vittorio Bottego

Vittorio Bottego ( born July 29, 1860 in Parma, † March 17, 1897 in Oromiya, Ethiopia ) was an Italian explorer of Africa.

The officer took Bottego end of the 19th century, two expeditions to the Horn of Africa: The first ( 1892-93 ) led him to present-day Somalia, where he explored around the rivers Webi and Imi as one of the first Europeans, the Jubaland and the territories.

1895-1897 he returned to the still unexplored Jubaland upper back and explored the Lake Rudolf, the Sobat and the Omo. Then he tried to get on Ethiopian territory back to the coast, which is an extremely dangerous undertaking was because the Ethiopian Empire just was at war with Italy. Near Oromiya was attacked his expeditionary force of warriors of a tribe of the Oromo and Bottego was killed in battle. Bottegos remains were never found, the story of his last expedition was supported by two of his companions, and Vannutelli Citerni says that survived the battle and for two years in captivity Menelik II were.
