Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani

Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani ( born March 5, 1951 in Rome ) is an Italian architect, theorist, historian and professor of architecture history of urban design at the ETH Zurich.

Academic education

Lampugnani attended from 1957 to 1960, the Swiss School in Rome, and then, from 1960 to 1970, the German School in Rome. From 1970 to 1973 he studied at the University La Sapienza in Rome and the University of Stuttgart architecture. In 1973 he received his diploma in 1977 he received his doctorate in Stuttgart. In 1983, he earned the Dottore in Architettura at the University of Rome.

Research and Science

Between 1974 and 1980 Lampugnani was a research associate at the Institute for Fundamentals of modern architecture and design at the University of Stuttgart Jürgen Joedicke. 1981-82 was followed by a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service in Berlin artist exchange program, 1981-83 a Research Fellowship of the American Council of Learned Societies at Columbia University in New York. 1983 was Lampugnani professor at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg, 1984-85 Professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Since 1994 he has been Professor of the History of Urban Design at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, from 1998 to 2001 and also head of the Department of Architecture, 2001-03 Deputy Head, since 2003 member of the Institute for Urban Design, 2005-07 Head of the Network City landscape. 2002-07 he was director of the graduate program "Urban Forms: conditions and consequences ", 2007-2010 Head of Research Group " Space Science in the ETH Domain " Since 2008 he has been deputy chief, since 2010 head of the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta. ). he also held numerous lectures and has held visiting professorships, including at Harvard University, at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona and at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano.

Lampugnani was one of the protagonists of the Berlin architectural dispute, which was sparked by the guidelines of the redevelopment of downtown Berlin after reunification. He propagates a formally disciplined, typical local - contextual and aesthetically sustainable architecture modernist or postmodernist without extravagances. Exhibitions

1984 led Lampugnani the exhibition " The Adventure of Ideas. From 1980-84 Lampugnani was scientific advisor to the International Building Exhibition Berlin ( the new construction areas ). 1981-85 was followed by the membership of the editorial committee of " Casabella " in Milan.
