The previously unnamed mountain was named to the proposal of the Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev on 17 February 2011 by order of the Kyrgyz unicameral Parliament Zhogorku Kenesh to Vladimir Putin. Previously, a law had been changed, which prohibited the naming after living persons.

Pik Putin located about 50 kilometers south of the capital Bishkek in chuya area in the Alatau mountains.

In Kyrgyzstan, there are already in Terskey Alatau the spades Yeltsin ( 5216 m) and on the border with Tajikistan since 1928, the Lenin so named ( 7134 m).
