Vojtěch Jarník

Vojtěch Jarník ( born December 22, 1897 in Prague, † September 22, 1970 ) was a Czechoslovak mathematicians. He dealt mainly with number theory, but also with Analysis.

Life

Jarník studied from 1915 at the Charles University of Prague, where he worked after graduation as an assistant and from 1919 to 1921 lecturer at the Technical University of Brno. His dissertation O kořenech funkcí Besselových ( About the roots of the Bessel functions ), he graduated from in 1921. Prior to 1928 was professor of mathematics at the Charles University in Prague in the year, he worked from the autumn of 1923 for 3 semester ( and again in 1927/28 ) under the direction of Edmund Landau in Göttingen. His chair in Prague had Jarník held until his retirement in 1968.

Together with Landau he examined the question of how many points with integer coordinates ( grid points ) contained in a given area are closed ( generalization of Gauss circle problem), which also later one of his main areas of work remained. He also discovered the algorithm of Prim for minimum spanning trees.

Jarník was the author of about 90 mathematical articles of a much-used multi-volume textbook of analysis and co-editor of the journal Acta Arithmetica.

The Vojtěch Jarník Competition is a competition in Eastern Europe rather known for mathematics student who is regularly held in the Czech Republic.

To Jarníks doctoral belonged Břetislav Novák.
