Voxnan

Voxnan at Frostkilen

Voxnan is an approximately 150 km long river in the Swedish region of Hälsingland and the largest tributary of the Ljusnan.

The river rises in the lake Siksjön Härjedalen and is popular in its upper course in canoeing athletes. There, where the coast was shortly after the last ice age, the border between the municipalities Ljusdal, Orsa and Ovanåker, the river one of the most distinctive forms rapids south of Fjell mountains. He then meanders through a sandy heath and makes showy embankments. After about 2/3 of its length the Voxnan go east. Here the river is steep and expanded to a great extent.

Southeast of Bollnäs Voxnan opens into the lake Varpen and unites with Ljusnan, which also flows through the Varpen.

The name probably comes from the Swedish word Voxnan for "Grow " ( växa ), which refers to the frequently occurring floods.
