Vsevolod Pudovkin

Vsevolod Pudovkin Illarionovich (Russian Всеволод Илларионович Пудовкин, scientific transliteration Vsevolod Pudovkin Illarionovič; * 16.jul / February 28 1893greg in Penza, .. † June 30, 1953 in Moscow (according to other sources in Riga) ) was a Soviet film director, actor and film theorist.

Life

Pudovkin studied mathematics at Moscow University, but graduated from not at the beginning of the First World War. As a soldier he was wounded in 1915 at the front and fell into German captivity. In 1918 he returned to Russia and worked as a chemist, since 1920 he studied at the State Film School in Moscow with Vladimir Gardin. His first single staged film, the comedy Chess Fever was in 1925 produced by the Mezhrabpom -Rus.

The director became famous with the movie Мать Revolution ( The Mother, 1926). The film adaptation of the story by Maxim Gorky heard alongside Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein to the most important films of the Soviet film history.

Other important films are Конец Санкт - Петербурга ( The End of St. Petersburg, 1927) and Потомок Чингис - Хана ( Storm Over Asia 1928).

In addition to his work as a director and occasional actor (1945, Ivan the Terrible) significantly influenced Pudovkin film theory with three books and numerous professional articles. In 1948 he was awarded the title " People's Artist of the USSR".

Pudovkin's 1958 film nut on the international film exhibition in Brussels was voted one of the six best films of all time.
