Vulcaniella

Vulcaniella is a genus of butterflies of the family splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ).

Features

The representatives of the genus are small moth with smooth scales on the head. The antennae are three-quarters to four-fifths as long as the forewing. The labial palps are cylindrical and elongated, the third segment is strongly bent upward and often extends considerably beyond the head. The front wings are constricted lanceolate and subapical significantly in the females of some species. The basic color ranges from black brown to dark brown to golden brown and the color pattern consists of white, silver or pale golden napkins and stains. The hind wings are very narrow.

In the males, the Tegumen is well developed and square. The rear end has a deep bulge. The Brachia are asymmetric. The right brachium is longer than the left, and often has a broadened peak. The bristles Valven are narrow and elongated and distally sparse. The right Valvella is well developed, while the left is greatly reduced and fused with the aedeagus. The aedeagus is thickened bulbous in the middle, the distal portion is tapered. The cecum penis is short and tubular, Cornuti are not formed. The praise of the 8th segment are roundish.

In females, the posterior Apophyses are approximately one and a half times as long as the anterior Apophyses. The sterigma with the characteristic sclerotized Antevaginalplatte is opposite the sclerotization at the rear end of the 7th sternite. The ductus bursae is long, narrow and membranous, sometimes distally sclerotized spots are available. The corpus bursae is oval to oblong. There are formed two funnel-shaped, inwardly directed signals that are often surrounded by strong circular wrinkles.

Dissemination

The species of the genus Vulcaniella are located in the Palearctic. In Europe, most species in the Mediterranean occur.

Biology

The caterpillars live as leaf miners on Labiatae ( Lamiaceae) and Compositae (Asteraceae).

System

The following list of species is based on the 2002 started by Sinev World catalog of cosmopterigid moths and was supplemented or corrected by other species. The type species of the genus is Elachista pomposella Zeller, 1839.
