Výrava (Medzilaborce District)

Výrava ( russinisch Вирава / Wyrawa, Hungarian Virava ) is a municipality in Laboretzer Bergland ( Laborecká Highlands ) in the north eastern Slovakia.

The municipality with russinischer majority than twelve kilometers south-east of the regional capital Medzilaborce at the foot of the Carpathian main ridge, which forms the border between Slovakia and Poland here. The Łupkowpass ( line Michalovce - Humenné - Medzilaborce - Sanok ) is only a few kilometers from Výrava away. The pass is considered the dividing line between the Carpathians parts Low Beskids and Bukovské Hills / Bieszczady. The highest elevations of the area form the Kobyla immediately west of the village ( 637 m asl) and the Vysoký Grúň east of Výrava on the Polish border (904 m above sea-level ). The municipality is located on the eponymous river Výrava, which rises on the main ridge of Carpathians and after about 20 km long running in a southerly direction near Jablon ( Okres Humenné ) opens into the Laborec.

By Výrava the approximately 40 -kilometer-long main street of Medzilaborce leads to Snina that crosses along the way at the foot of the hills along several river valleys.

The place was first mentioned in 1557 in a document.

The population fluctuated in the years 1991 to 2008 between 144 and 192 The population Výravas is half Russian women, 37 % of the inhabitants are Slovaks and 7% Roma. 49 % of the population profess the Greek - Catholic Church, about 32 % are Orthodox Christians, 13 % are Roman Catholics.
