The Waimea River Waimea or stream is a river in the Southland in the south of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a tributary of the Mataura River. The plane formed by the river Waimea Plains is part of the Southland Plains.

It rises southeast of Lumsden and flows between Mandeville and Otamita in the Mataura. The Waimea River Road follows the middle and lower reaches of the river.

The river is like the Mataura River and its other tributaries, a well-known waters for trout fishing.
