Southland Plains

The Southland Plains is the name of a large lowland in the south of the South Island of New Zealand. It is bounded on the north by the Hokonui Hills and includes a substantial portion of the Southland region, including the largest cities in the region, Invercargill and Gore. On the Southland Plains is located with the most fertile farmland in New Zealand.

The plain extends from the Waiau River in the west to the Mataura River, which forms the border to the east Otago. The area can be divided into three major sections: the Southland Plain, the Waimea Plains and the plain to the west near the Waiau river.

The Southland and Waimea Plains west are separated Gore from the highlands of Hokonui Hills. The Southland Plain is located north of Invercargill and was formed from several major rivers, the Aparima, Oreti and Makarewa River. To the west is a third level in the lower reaches and mouth of the Waiau River. This smaller plane is bounded by the Longwood Range and Takitimu Mountains to the east and Fiordland in the west.
