Wakkerstroom
Province
Wakkerstroom ( isiZulu / Afrikaans, German as: " current monitor " ) is the second oldest city in the province of Mpumalanga in South Africa. The city was founded in 1859 and had 6,852 inhabitants in 2011.
Name
The name is derived from uThaka, the Zulu name for the river that flows nearby ( German: "awake" ). It was the name of Wakkerstroom in Afrikaans.
Economy
Sheep and cattle farming are the main sources of income in the area around Wakkerstroom.
Fauna
The Wakkerstrom area is now considered one of the best birding areas in South Africa. Here can be observed including the Erdspecht, but also spur the lark and finch lark and several bustards and cranes.
