Waldyr Calheiros Novaes

Waldyr Calheiros Novaes de Novais ( born July 29, 1923 in Murici, † November 30, 2013 in Volta Redonda ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Barra do Pirai - Volta Redonda.

Life

Waldyr Calheiros Novaes de Novais studied philosophy at the Major Seminary of Maceió (AL) and theology at St. Joseph Seminary in Rio de Janeiro. He received on 25 July 1948, the ordination. He was a teacher, spiritual director and vice-rector of St. Joseph Seminary in Rio de Janeiro, as well as pastor of St. Francis Xavier ( 1956-1964 ).

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on 25 February 1964 Auxiliary Bishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and Titular Bishop of Mulia. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, Jaime Cardinal de Barros Câmara, on 1 May of the same year; Co-consecrators were Adelmo Cavalcante Machado, Archbishop of Maceió, and Othon Motta, Bishop of Campanha. His motto was Amen, Alleluia.

Novaes de Novais was a Council Father of the last two sessions of the Second Vatican Council.

On October 20, 1966 he was appointed Paul VI. Bishop of Barra do Pirai - Volta Redonda. On 17 November 1999, Pope John Paul II accepted his pre- mounted resignation for reasons of age.

Work

The office of bishop Dom Waldyr was marked by confrontations with social causes, especially during the time of the military dictatorship of 1964 until 1985. As a young bishop, he sat down again and again and for demonstrations against violence and against political persecution and denounced the practice of torture by the military and was involved in the squatters' movement and the labor movement. He has won several human rights awards, including 1999, the Tiradentes Medal of the State of Rio de Janeiro ( Assembleia Legislativa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro) and 2007, the Medal of Merit of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies ( Câmara dos Deputados do Brasil ) in Brasilia.
