Walter B. Pitkin

Walter Boughton Pitkin ( born February 6, 1878 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, † January 25, 1953 in Palo Alto, California ) was an American psychologist, journalist and author who was known primarily for his book Life Begins at Forty.

Life

Pitkin studied post-school at the University of Michigan and earned a Bachelor of Arts there in 1900. After he studied 1900-1905 at the Theological Seminary in Hartford, he was from 1905 to 1909 Lecturer in Psychology at Columbia University. He was also the 1907-1908 editorial board member at the New York Tribune, one of the leading and most influential newspapers in the United States, and then from 1909 to 1910 in the newspaper The New York Evening Post.

In 1912 he accepted an appointment as a professor of journalism at Columbia University and taught at these more than thirty years until his retirement in 1943. Besides this teaching, he was from 1927 to 1930 and editor of Parents Magazine, a company founded in 1926 monthly magazine for young parents, and at the same time from 1927 to 1928 Managing Editor for the Americas of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Pitkin was also the founder of the Institute of Life Planning (1932 ) and 1939 by The American Majority and worked from 1935 to 1938 as editor of the Farm Journal, before handing this function to Wheeler McMillen.

In addition to his journalistic activities and his teaching, he was also the author of numerous popular books that dealt in particular with the aging and the life from the age of forty, and sometimes early appeared in German translation. His best-known books include:
