Walter Habersatter

Walter Habersatter ( born March 14, 1930, in Radstadt ) is a former Austrian ski jumper and ski coach. His biggest success was the 2nd place in the Four Hills Tournament 1958/59.

Walter Habersatter learned after attending the elementary and secondary school in Radstadt the profession of pastry chef. By the way, he ran skiing, first in the alpine area. In 1947, he was doing 2 of the Austrian Youth Championships. Since greater success but not einstellten, he turned to the end of his apprenticeship to a first operating as a ski and mountain guide for American soldiers in the barracks in Saalfelden. He was also the first time with jump skis in contact, he experimented with, among others, on the Radstadt Felser jump. After some time, the ski jumping coach, veteran Sepp Bradl was aware of him and summoned him to the Austrian Ski Federation National squad. In the 1954/55 season Habersatter was first nominated for the Four Hills Tournament. His first major success was also achieved in him this season. For the SK Radstadt starting, he was on the light stone hill in Semmering before 50,000 spectators in the winter of 1955 Austrian Champion. He referred his coach Bradl with 2.3 points ahead of second place. This championship he followed later four runner-up title. 1956 won Habersatter the Kongsbergcup and was also nominated for the Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d' Ampezzo. He finished in 15th place in jumping on the normal hill. 1957 made ​​Habersatter the first time at the Four Hills Tournament with a 9th place in Bischofshofen attention. He then won the Switzerland Tour, where he chose three of four competitions of its own. The following season in 1957/58 he came each to third place in Oberstdorf and Innsbruck. At the end, he finished 9th place in the overall ranking. Due to these achievements Habersatter was subsequently nominated for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, where, however, he finished only a disappointing 31st place for him. Better it should run in 1959. Walter Habersatter came through his victory in Bischofshofen still in second place overall in the Four Hills Tournament 1958/59. He was the second Austrian, who scored a podium place in the overall ranking. A victory at the Sweden - tour and third places respectively in Russia and Norway tour rounded off this season best for him. In addition Habersatter was voted " world's best jumpers " of the year. The Olympic season 1959/60 was, however, completely opposite. In the Four Hills Tournament Habersatter approached only in Garmisch, where he also was injured and in Squaw Valley jumped other Austrians for the medals. Although Habersatter part of the Olympic squad and also drove with the games, but there he remained substitute. Also in the next few years he was able to make only sporadic attention. In the season 61/62 Habersatter still managed a third place in Innsbruck and a sixth place in the overall standings of the Four Hills Tournament. This performance was rewarded with the nomination of the 31 -year-old at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane. However, was the disillusionment in resort. For jumping on the normal hill Habersatter was not taken into account, on the large hill, he finished 44th. In the next 2 Four Hills tour he was nominated only for individual jumping. Nevertheless Habersatter was nominated for the Olympic Winter Games of 1964 in his home country again. Ultimately, however, it remained only when used as a fore. After 10 years of high-performance sports joined the now 34 -year-old back in the same year. Shortly after he took over as coach the national team of the Austrian Ski ski jumper, for which he was responsible in Oslo to the Nordic World Ski Championships 1966. After Walter Habersatter returned to his home town of Radstadt, where he remained connected in many ways to the sport. He made himself especially to the development of ski tourism to Radstadt around deserves. He was amadé the co-founder of the Salzburg Sports World, a network of cable car companies, and for 15 years its president.

Walter Habersatter is the father of five children, including Walter Habersatter junior. This was the silver medalist in downhill skiing in Innsbruck in 1976, Brigitte Totschnig married.
