Walter L. Gordon

Walter Lockhart Gordon, PC, CC ( born January 27, 1906 in Toronto, Ontario, † March 21, 1987 ) was a Canadian politician.

Biography

Gordon, who was originally economic managers, gained national notoriety in 1955 when he as Chairman of the Royal Commission on Economic forecasts (Commission on Canada's Economic Prospects ) was. In its report of 1957, the Gordon Commission lamented not only the foreign impact on the Canadian economy, but also discussed the export of natural resources, called for a more educated workforce and an equitable geographical distribution of wealth in Canada.

Between 1962 and 1968 he was a member of the lower house, where he represented the interests of the Liberal Party in the constituency Davenport.

In 1963 he was appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as finance minister in his cabinet. He scored a stir with the submission of its first budget when he was criticized for the violation of the budget secrecy and forced by business lobby and the U.S. on his promises concerning the control of foreign ownership in Canada amend. In 1965 he resigned as finance minister back after the Liberal Party of Canada had lost majority at its proposed early elections for the lower house. However, Pearson remained Prime Minister of a minority government, in which he again called Gordon as a minister without portfolio in 1967. After the end of Pearson's term of office in June 1968, he resigned from the Cabinet and returned to the economy.

During the 1970s he was a founder of the Committee for an Independent Canada ( Committee for Independent of Canada), which was influential in close to ten years before it dissolved.

He was most recently 1973-1977 Chancellor of York University in Toronto. At this university in 1981, a Walter L. Gordon Lecture ( Lecture ) was founded.

For his services he was awarded, among others, in 1976 with the title Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest level of the Order of Canada and Canada's highest award for civilians. Because of this award, he was entitled to the additional name "CC" to lead. 1977 published his memoirs.
