Walter Schleger

Walter Schleger ( born September 19, 1919 in Prague; † 3 December 1999) was an Austrian football player at the position of a striker as well as a university professor of Kynologie in Vienna. His biggest success was the participation in the 1954 World Cup with the Austrian national team, he also was convened in 1955 in the European selection. He was regarded as a tricky, very fast player with a good sprint ability as well as a fine art.

Career

Walter Schleger began playing football in the youth team of Sparta Prague, before he came to Vienna. His first game in the championship The forward played in 1949 for the Wiener Sport - Club. He left the Dornbacher soon and moved to Vienna Austria in 1951, where he remained until the end of his career. As a new Austrianer he also debuted on September 23, 1951 for the Austrian national team in the match against Germany. After Walter Schleger in 1953 with the Violet wins the championship, he takes in 1954 with the national team at the World Cup in Switzerland, in part.

Walter Schleger comes in the first game of the World Cup, the 1-0 victory over Scotland used, but must be in the following games together with Robert Service make room in the storm his club colleague Ernst Stojaspal and Turl Wagner. The Austrian team reached the semi-finals, in which once again Walter Schleger allowed to play. He does this, however, as a defender, because the trained striker Helmut Rahn should stop. Austria is subject to Germany, but suggests in the small final for third place the hitherto reigning world champions Uruguay.

1958, Walter topper one more time with the national team at a World Cup finals. In Sweden, however, the Austrians fail already in the group stage, where they had drawn with Brazil, England and the Soviet Union a particularly heavy burden. At the end of his football career wins Walter Schleger three league titles with Austria en suite (1961, 1962, 1963) and can also celebrate many successes in the cup.

After his football career, the doctorate in veterinary medicine Canine turned on and eventually became as Univ. -Prof. Dr. Walter Schleger and Chairman of the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Veterinary University of Vienna one of the leading authorities in this field.
