Wandsworth Bridge

The Wandsworth Bridge is a road bridge over the River Thames in London. It connects the district of Parsons Green in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham on the north side with the district Wandsworth in the London Borough of Wandsworth on the south side. About the built of steel, 197 m long cantilever bridge carries the main road A217.

Although the planning permission already existed in 1864, the bridge was only completed in 1873. It consisted of wrought iron, the road was made of wood. When the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1880 acquired the bridge, they abolished the toll. The then started planning for a new building were delayed by decades. Only in 1935 gave the London County Council planning permission. With a temporary bridge traffic could be maintained during the construction period. The opening of the new bridge was 1940.
