Wappinger is a town in Dutchess County of the U.S. state of New York. The name is derived from the Wappinger tribe of Wappani, who lived before the white settlers in the area. In 2000, the Town had 26 274 inhabitants.

History

The city was first settled in about 1659. As an administrative unit was formed from the Town of Fishkill. In 1900, the Town of Wappinger 4389 inhabitants.

The town was founded as part of an acquired by Francis Rombout area.

Geography

Wappinger is located in the southern part of Dutchess County and covers an area of 74.0 km ², of which 70.6 km ² accounts for land and 3.4 km ² ( = 4.62% ) form water. In the northern part of the urban area, there is a campus of the Ditches Community College. About 2 /3 of the Village of Wappingers Falls Wappingers part of the urban area, the rest belongs to the Town of Poughkeepsie, which adjoins the north. To the south lies Fishkill.

The central lifeline is U.S. Highway 9, in which the largest part of the industry of the area have settled. The western city limit is partly formed by the Hudson River and is adjacent to the Orange County and the Ulster County

Demography

At the time of the census of 2000, there were 26 274 people Wappinger. The population density was 372.0 people per km ². There were 10,144 housing units at an average 143.6 per km ². The population consisted of Hoquiams 86.18 % White, 4.96 % African American, 0.24 % Native American, 4.29% Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander, 2.44 % reported other races to belong and 1.88 % from two or more races. 7.87 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Residents Wappingers distributed to 9793 households out of which 34.3% were living in children under 18 years. 58.1 % married couples living together, 9.4 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6 % were non-families. 23.1% of households were made ​​up of individuals and someone lived in 6.2% of all households aged 65 years or older.
