War of the Confederation

The Peruvian- Bolivian Konföderationskrieg ( Guerra de Confederación Perú - Boliviana ) took place from 1836 to 1839.

The Bolivian general Andrés de Santa Cruz marched in Lima, Peru on August 15, 1836. He divided Peru into a Northern and Southern state. The north was ruled by Luís José de Orbego and the South by General Ramón Herrera. Santa Cruz continued General José Miguel de Velasco as a protector of the new Peruvian- Bolivian Confederation formed.

The U.S., Britain and France recognized the new federation. However, since Santa Cruz tried to achieve the former territorial expansion of the Inca Empire and Chile and Argentina felt threatened because of that, the latter attacked in a pre-emptive strike. 1837 Argentine army units tried to overthrow Santa Cruz, which failed.

In October 1837 landed 2,800 soldiers in the Chilean port of Islay in southern Peru and conquered the city of Arequipa. Diseases weakened the Chilean troops and forced them to make peace with Santa Cruz on November 17, 1837 with the Treaty of Paucarpata. Chile broke the contract and ended on August 6, 1838 General Manuel Bulnes Prieto in the town of Ancon north of Lima. The Chilean fleet blockaded the Peruvian port of Callao.

In November 1837, the Peruvian ships " Socabaya ", " Confederation " and "Congress" the Juan Fernandez Islands, and the Chilean port city of Talcahuano, Huasco and San Antonio attacked. In addition, the Peruvian troops landed in San Antonio and Caldera.

In October 1838 Lima fell into Chilean hands. Santa Cruz then sent large troops, the Chileans withdrew from Lima to Huasco back. Santa Cruz was not able to beat the Chilean forces decisively.

On January 12, 1839, Peruvian fleet was destroyed in Casma by the Chileans under the command of British Admiral Robert Simpson. On January 20, 1839 General Manuel Bulnes Prieto marched with 5,400 men at Yungay against the Bolivian army before and defeated the troops of Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz was forced to abdicate and fled to Ecuador.
