Warmer Damm

The thermal barrier is a park in the Hessian capital Wiesbaden. He was created in the years 1859-1860 on the edge of the Historical pentagon, the Wiesbaden's historic quarter in the style of an English landscape garden. At its northern edge is the Hessian State Theatre.

Site

The thermal barrier owes its name to a part of the fortification of Wiesbaden - a dam, which limited the so-called " warm pond ", where the drains of the 26 thermal springs collected. The pond, which was used as a horse-pond, one of a series of trenches that had been created to protect the city in the swampy terrain in the 17th century. 1805 the pond was filled in and the land as a herb farm, and as the site of a brick factory and the mill Pletz. 1810 Wilhelm road was built, the name was later transferred to the newly created park, which was designed in 1859 as an extension of the gardens of horticultural director Carl Friedrich Thelemann. Along with spa and park it was in the 19th century an important institution for the " Gesellschaftskur ".

Enhancements and Modifications

1879 William Fountain was opened, which received its water from the springs in the nearby cooking well. It was in 1934 decommissioned and removed. The construction of the Hessian State Theatre (1892-1894) and the system of parking in the 1960s, the park lost a quarter of its original area. A monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I, the sculptor Rafaelo Celai had created according to the plans of the Dresden artist Johannes Schilling in 1894, was inaugurated in the presence of Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II. Directly in front of the south portal of the State Theatre is since 1905 the Schiller monument of Joseph Uphues, which was erected to commemorate 100th anniversary of Schiller. In the late 20th century view terraces at the pond, a playground and chess squares were created.

Flora and Fauna

During initial 700 trees were present, the stock has shrunk to about 200. In addition to rare trees ( including locust, ornamental quinces, pagoda tree, tulip tree, ginkgo, star magnolia and witch hazel ) is found in the park, a pond with water fountain (since 1988 ) and numerous sculptures (since 1980). The pond is inhabited by herons, Egyptian Nilgänsen, moorhens and mallards.

Climate

The influence of the hot springs in its vicinity already owes the thermal barrier early in the year a considerable bloom. The lawn in front of the State Theatre enjoys great popularity in the summer. During each year in June held Wilhelmstrasse this festival is also used for a live stage.

Situation today

The total investment of the park is a protected monument. A 2008 completed thesis proves that the original plan of the Hofgarten Director Carl Friedrich Thelemann had made, had a more nuanced terrain outline provided. The Exile was designed in wide arcs, they should flow around the individual green islands elegant and connect all the parts together in harmony. Of the originally planted 40 species of coniferous and deciduous trees you counted today just 15

The facility will be used repeatedly for major events, which caused damage caused by soil compaction and provoked criticism of non-compliance with requirements. The daily press pointed to the recurrent contamination of the plant, especially in the summer months, the park offers due to Private Picnic events a sight you should not expect to spa guests Wiesbaden. In winter, a skating rink was set up on the grassy areas.
