Wasa is a brand name of Barilla and goes back to the former Wasabröd AB, which bears the name Barilla Sverige AB since the takeover by Barilla. Many products from Barilla (also Italian ) are sold under the brand Wasa.

History

The company was founded in 1919 by Karl Edvard Lundström Skellefteå under the name AB Skellefteå Spisbrödsfabrik. 1931 the company moved to Filipstad. In 1957 the company changed its name to AB Wasa Spisbrödsfabrik, since 1964 it was Wasabröd AB ( AB stands for Aktiebolaget, Swedish term for Aktiengesellschaft). The company was named after the Swedish king Gustav I Vasa (also rye king).

1965 factory was opened in Denmark, another in Germany in 1967.

In 1999 the company was bought by the Italian Barilla Group Barilla Sverige AB and renamed (brand name continues: Wasa ). Since then, for example crackers with olive oil from Italy many products from Barilla offered under the name Wasa in Germany.

Business

Wasa is the world's self-proclaimed biggest producer of crispbread and employs about 950 people. The main office is located in Stockholm, the production facilities are located in Sweden Filipstad, Hamar in Norway as well as in Celle. In Germany, the products on the Barilla Germany GmbH in Cologne are sold. The total turnover of Wasa comes to an annual average of approximately 160 million euros.
