Waseda University

The Waseda University (Japanese早 稲 田 大学, Waseda daigaku ), in short: sodai (早 大), in addition to the Keio University is one of the most prestigious private universities in Japan.

Foundation

The school was built by the former samurai and later Prime Minister of Japan, Okuma Shigenobu, in 1882 as a technical school Tōkyō (东京 専 门 学校, Tōkyō Semmon Gakko ) founded, whose statue stands on the campus Nishi- Waseda. It was declared in 1902 to a full-fledged university. Large parts of the campus were destroyed during the bombing of Tokyo in World War II, but the university was rebuilt and reopened in 1949.
