The water sports lake Zuelpich is incurred by the reclamation of the open pit Zuelpich lake. The lake is about 1.2 km long and 500 m wide and has a total area of ​​approximately 85 ha The lake is part of the Kottenforst Ville and located in the Lower Eifel.

History

The lake is just like the Naturschutzsee Füssenich by surface mining in the region Zuelpich and subsequent recultivation measures in the 70s emerged. After the end of the lignite production in 1969, the residual hole was flooded with the Vlattener creek. Since it is used as a leisure and recreation center. At the south-west shore is a sandy beach was created over a length of approximately 150 meters, which is used as a supervised swimming area.

Since the late 90s, there was an increased concentration of faecal bacteria, caused by goose feces. In June 2003, the lake, therefore, in an EU report received a rating of " poor quality ", a bathing was prohibited. To change the situation, the city Zuelpich had rebuilt the bathing area in order to achieve a better circulation of the water. These measures took effect, already in 2004, classified the country's Department of Environment and Conservation, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of the lake as "very good for bathing ".

The water sports lake will play a central role in the state garden show Zuelpich 2014, there will be a 20 -acre park built in the immediate vicinity of the lake. This park includes the creation of a large promenade and a new seaside resort.

The City Council Zuelpich decided at its meeting on 13 December 2011 due to the construction work and the required Baustraßenzufahrten in the southern part of the lake to suspend the use of bathing at the water sports lake until the re-opening of the resort in 2014.

Zuelpicher Seefest

Since 2003, the Lake Festival is annually held in the summer. This is a two day festival with some sporting competitions and a musical program.
