Watts (Los Angeles)

Watts is a residential district in southern Los Angeles and part of South Los Angeles, formerly South Central. In Watts 34.830 inhabitants living on an area of ​​5.2 km ².

History

The city, founded in 1907 was incorporated in 1926 in Los Angeles. At that time the population in Watts was mostly white. That changed in the 1940s and 1950s, when thousands of blacks from the southern United States, such as Louisiana, Alabama and Texas moved to California. For this, the city council of Los Angeles built several large council estates, including in Watts. Internationally became the county in 1965, when then ran out of the Watts riots. The situation of African Americans in Watts was regarded as exemplary for all blacks in the United States, which is why the festival Wattstax was laid in 1972 deliberately property situated in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
