Watts (Los Angeles)
Watts is a residential district in southern Los Angeles and part of South Los Angeles, formerly South Central. In Watts 34.830 inhabitants living on an area of 5.2 km ².
History
The city, founded in 1907 was incorporated in 1926 in Los Angeles. At that time the population in Watts was mostly white. That changed in the 1940s and 1950s, when thousands of blacks from the southern United States, such as Louisiana, Alabama and Texas moved to California. For this, the city council of Los Angeles built several large council estates, including in Watts. Internationally became the county in 1965, when then ran out of the Watts riots. The situation of African Americans in Watts was regarded as exemplary for all blacks in the United States, which is why the festival Wattstax was laid in 1972 deliberately property situated in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In the 1970s, the demographic composition of the population changed again due to the influx of residents from Mexico and other Latin American countries. This was also reflected in the riots in Los Angeles in 1992, where there were street battles between black and Latin American residents.
Watts is one of the neighborhoods with the highest crime rate in the City of Los Angeles. It is generally advised not to visit the area after dark.
Traffic
The district is connected via the Blue Line and the Green Line to the rail network of the metro Los Angeles. At the Imperial / Wilmington / Rosa Parks station there is a node point of the two lines. In addition, the buses run LACMTA (Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Association ).
Attractions, Trivia
A landmark of the district are the Italian immigrant Simon Rodia from the 1921-1954 built Watts Towers. In 1993, the film Menace II Society was shot largely in Watts, who has the crime in Watts to content.
