Watts Towers

The Watts Towers are an example of bizarre architecture in Los Angeles in the U.S. state of California.

History

They were built by Italian immigrant Sabato "Simon" Rodia in his spare time in the eponymous district of Watts. He worked 33 years to it from 1921 until 1954. Towers consist of a collection of 17 structures from scrap, waste and concrete and are at the highest point 30 meters (99 feet) high. The structures were decorated with sculptures, majolica and small mosaics in the style of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí.

In the Northridge earthquake in 1994, the towers were damaged, it was repaired by 2001.

Cultural and Medial

The towers are the scene of the showdowns of the thriller Ricochet - The impact and the blaxploitation horror film Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde. Furthermore, they are in the movies Colors - Colors of Violence, Menace II Society and Wild West inclusive and in the Simpsons episode Angry Dad - The Movie and the computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and to see Grand Theft Auto V.
