Wells River is a town in Orange County of the State of Vermont in the United States with 399 inhabitants ( according to the census of 2010). The village lies at the confluence of the Wells River in the Connecticut River, directly across from Woodsville, New Hampshire. The place is a village politically and administratively dependent on the parent Town Newbury.

The exact founding date of the place is not known. But he appears to have been shortly after the proclamation of Newbury, ie from about 1680, settled. This is supported on the one hand, the location of the place just downstream of some rapids within a few Flusschleifen in the Connecticut River, which represented at that time the only transport route in the area and which could be easily circumvented if you landed here at the mouth of Wells River. Secondly, the Wells River was with its high flow rate is an ideal location for companies that worked by water power. In fact, some mills are very early occupied in the lower course of the river.

Since the late 1840s the construction of the railways was heavily promoted in Vermont and surrounding states. Here, the valley of the Connecticut River was used as a natural thoroughfare. On November 6, 1848, the railway line White River Junction - Lennoxville reached the place. A cross- connection across the river towards the Atlantic coast was realized in 1853 in the form of the railway Concord - Wells River; a route through the valley of the Wells River to the capital of Vermont, the railway Montpelier Wells River, went into operation in 1873. Wells River was characterized by interchange station for these compounds, what the actual place but did not change significantly: still predominantly agricultural he stayed. The passenger services on these lines was set in the 1950s and 1960s and the routes shut down part. Today, Wells River is mainly determined by the U.S. Route 5 U.S. Route 302 and Interstate 91 connected to the outside world.

Parts of the town center are listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.
