Werner Janensch

Werner Ernst Martin Janensch ( born November 10, 1878 in Herzberg (Elster ), † 20 October 1969 in Berlin) was a German paleontologist, geologist and explorer.

Werner Janensch was one of the outstanding German vertebrate paleontologists from the first half of the 20th century and, in addition Friedrich von Huene, probably the most important German dinosaur specialist. He is particularly known for his leadership of the German Tendaguru expeditions which he undertook as curator of the Berlin Zoological Museum in 1909 and the results of which he published in his long research career 1914-1961 in numerous monographs and shorter works. Janensch named among other species of dinosaurs Brachiosaurus brancai Dicraeosaurus hermanni, Dicraeosaurus sattleri and Elaphrosaurus bambergi.

The Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences honored him in 1911 with the silver Leibniz Medal. In 1912 he was appointed professor at the Geology and Palaeontology Institute of the Friedrich -Wilhelms- University of Berlin. In 1958 he was made an honorary member of the Paleontological Society.
