Weserburg

The castle Weser, Bremen's museum of modern art - is one of the largest contemporary art museums in Germany.

It is located in four former granaries on the Teerhof at the west end of the city of Werder Bremen. On 6000 m² of exhibition surface of various international art movements are presented since the 1940 years since 1991 works. The foundation of the museum comes from an idea that grew out of an exhibition shown in 1982 in the Society for Contemporary Art, which is also located in the building of the Weser castle. As here, the collector Onnasch exhibited the works of the artist Edvard Kienholz ( Edvard Kienholz. Roxy's and other works from the collection Onnasch ), the idea of a collector's museum came up. From the Weser castle a museum of contemporary art should be, in which several major art collectors their collections (or parts thereof) issue would be prepared. 1989 was appointed as the founding director Thomas Deecke, who was commissioned to realize this idea. Within a short time he managed to move around ten collectors to present their stocks in the Weser castle. The opening of the Weser castle, then under the name " New Museum Weserburg ", took place on 6 September 1991.

Concept

In the museum you can experience not only the works of contemporary artists, but also an unusual museum concept. For the first time in Europe the idea of a collector's museum on the principle of public-private partnership between the city of Bremen and the collectors was implemented in Bremen. For a number of major European collections priorities have been selected that provide an impressive insight into the art of the immediate present and recent past. The individual art passion to the private collector and the art-historical view of the museum combine in the lively atmosphere of the house. Each of the collections preserved its specific character, which is visible not only in the choice of artists and artistic ideas, but also in the presentation.

The Weser castle museum designed several exhibitions annually. The permanent collections are made in this way in the context of the latest developments in the art. Many of the exhibitions that are designed in the Weser castle, then go on tour to other prestigious venues in Europe, to the Far East or South America.

In 1999 the purchase of the Archive for Small Press & Communication ( ASPC ). At the same time the Research Centre for Artists' Publications was founded, in addition to the ASPC includes other archives. It serves the most international holdings of artists' publications in Europe: artist's books, multiples, records and posters of all artistic movements since the 60s, of Fluxus through to computer art or Stamp Art Collection provides a global picture, both recognized and the alternative art scene - by Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, Roy Adzak to Carlos Zerpa.
