Westland Widgeon (helicopter)

The Westland Widgeon was a of the British company Westland Aircraft on their own more advanced helicopter. He is a light multi-role helicopter and was based on the previous model Westland Dragonfly HR5.

History

After the success with the license-built Dragonfly Westland began to build two more types in parallel. In addition to the turn, built under license by Westland Whirlwind Sikorsky the company worked simultaneously on a further development of the Dragonfly. The number of seats was increased to five by an enlarged and reinforced cab. However, the Widgeon did not sell well, a total of only 15 copies were built, some of which were conversions of existing Dragonfly HR5. Individual copies of the Widgeon were in the UK, Hong Kong, Japan and Jordan in use, mostly in the service of the military or (as in Hong Kong) to the police. A few machines were equipped as a medical transport helicopter for two injured. After the British left the Air Force plan to procure 24 Widgeon fall, and the helicopter also internationally hardly found buyers, the production was stopped. Westland then focused on the production of significantly more successful Whirlwind.
