Whau River

The Whau River is contrary to its name, no flow in the true sense, but an elongated estuary of the southwestern Waitemata Harbour in Auckland metropolitan area in the North Island of New Zealand. It extends five kilometers from its mouth between the Te Atatu Peninsula and the Rosebank Peninsula to Avondale to the south. He runs towards the Manukau Harbour to the south, but ends at New Lynn North.

The Whau River covers the suburbs of Glendene and Kelston. Auckland City is located east, Waitakere City west of the arm. He has a small branch, the Wairau Creek in the southwest.

The area around the mouth is as Motu Manawa / Pollen Iceland Marine Reserve under protection. Pollen Iceland or Motu Manawa and the nearby small island Traherne Iceland are located on the northern tip of the Rosebank Peninsula. The islands are connected to the mainland by causeways and bridges that are part of State Highway 16.
