White-tailed dunnart

Sminthopsis granulipes, in English also known under the name "White- tailed dunnart " and " Ash -gray dunnart " is a Beutelsäugerart from the kind of Schmalfuß Bag mice. It has not yet recognized German name. The Dasyuridae is endemic to Australia.

Description and life

The body length is between 70 and 100 mm, plus 56-68 mm tail. The weight varies between 18 and 35 g The tail is brown at its root, towards the tip white. Often it is thickened, what the fat storage is.

Little is known about the behavior and reproduction of the species. Most likely it is nocturnal. The young are born from June to August and weaned in October. The diet consists mainly of insects.

Distribution and habitat

Sminthopsis granulipes comes in two areas off Western Australia. This one is located east of Perth in the western gold fields, the other north of Perth between Kalbarri and Jurien Bay. The habitat ranges of coastal heath countries to dense bushland.

The IUCN lists this species as " safely " ( least concern ).
