Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic is an American southern rock band from Athens, Georgia.

History

The band was formed in 1985 out of a weekly jam session at the University of Georgia and had on 24 February under the name Widespread Panic 's first appearance. Founding members were singer-guitarist John Bell, guitarist Michael Houser, bassist Dave Schools and drummer Todd Nance. After having created mostly cover songs of Van Morrison, the Grateful Dead and traffic were played, quickly expanded his own songs the band played.

In February 1986, appeared with Sleepy Monkey the first single of the band. From October of the same year Sonny Ortiz played regularly with the group, but it took until 1989 before he was inducted as an official member. On February 4, 1988, the debut album Space Wrangler appeared on Landslide Records. This and the following tour an ever- growing fan base was created and Widespread Panic moved in 1991 to the major label Capricorn Records, where in the same year the album Widespread Panic appeared.

In 1993, the collaborated with Vic Chesnutt. Under the name of brute. Album Nine High a Pallet was recorded, which was however not published until 1995. In 2002 he released a second album of collaboration.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the group reached its peak when they played over 250 concerts a year and counted along with Phish the most popular bands in the South. Several records with sold-out concerts were erected.

In June 2002, at the start of the annual summer tour, the band had to cope with a setback. Michael Houser had to cancel the tour due to health reasons and in August 2002 he died of cancer. George McConnell took his place.

After 18 years together, the band took a break in 2004, but started in March 2005, the next tour. In the fall of 2006, George McConnell again left the band and was replaced by Jimmy Herring. 2007-2011 and toured the band tours through the USA. With ever sold-out concerts, partly on three consecutive days in the same city, the band enjoys a wide popularity. End of July 2011 for the first time they gave two concerts in Japan. 2012 put the band a break from touring, since the spring of 2013 they toured again through the United States.

Widespread Panic has sold over 3 million albums. It previously 15 boards and five DVDs were released.
